I want a president…, 2010 – 2011
Action in public space
On 18th of September 2010, the artists Malin Arnell, Kajsa Dahlberg, Johanna Gustavsson and Fia-Stina Sandlund organized a collective gathering in the public space of Stockholm, addressing the forth-coming parliament elections that were to take place in Sweden on the next day. The flash-mob like performative action took place on Sergels Torg, the central square in Stockholm which is often used as a stage for holding demonstrations and political manifestations. For the duration of one hour, a slightly adapted version of I want a president..., a text written in 1992 by the US-American queer artist Zoe Leonard was read out loud again and again. The text that opens with the sentence “I want a dyke for a president” is an empowering statement, pointing to the opposition between the typically white, middle class and male-dominated political elite and marginalized social groups who are excluded from the realm of policy-making due to their sexual orientation, gender, class, nationality or color. Somewhat resonating with Martin Luther King’s legendary I Have a Dream speech, the text expresses a hope for a more just society where different minority groups would have access to democratic representation.
